The sidewalk just outside the park fence was in need of repair for decades. Sections raised by tree roots and broken sections made it difficult for the constant stream of walkers, runners and dog walkers to enjoy it. A 2013 sale of park bonds by the City of St. Louis yielded over $360,000 for Lafayette Park improvement.
Most of the funding went toward replacing the entire sidewalk fronting Lafayette Avenue in 2014. Individual sections along the other surrounding streets and at the corner at Park and Mississippi were also replaced. Brown gravel aggregate was mixed into the concrete so new sections blended with the old. Today, our sidewalks are easily journeyed, by baby strollers, bike tires, or sneakers.
