Setting out for a walk, I paused just past my building\u2019s threshold to savor morning air crisp as a fresh Granny Smith apple, perfumed with a blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves that have been whisked, infused, and frapp\u00e9d into breads, muffins, cupcakes, donuts, bagels, coffee, beer, hard seltzer, Cheerios, Jell-O, Spam\u2026 oh! and pie ( I almost forgot about pie). For the past decade or so, pumpkin spice has been the signature scent of autumn, yet everyone from Boomers to Gen X, Y, and Z is familiar with another, more enduring, squash-themed seasonal signpost \u2014 It\u2019s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

The Peanuts gang continue to make their neighborhood rounds, year after year\u2026 first on network television, then on DVD, now via streaming. From the show\u2019s premier in 1966 until current day, Halloween has grown in popularity from a single evening\u2019s event almost exclusively for kids to an extended excuse for grown-ups to decorate, dress up, and party. That said, belief in a pudgy orange gourd that rises from a tangle of vines to bestow gifts on guileless youngsters never quite got off the ground\u2026 the same way Lucy, Schroeder, Pigpen, Sally, et al. never progress into adolescence and adulthood, I guess.<\/h4>\n

There\u2019s no need for disappointment or to wait until next year if your local patch isn\u2019t deemed worthy of an appearance by produce of mythological proportions.\u00a0 You can see the living, breathing Great Pumpkinseed Sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus<\/em>) almost any time you like in lakes, rivers, and streams across most of North American and much of Europe.<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

This colorful Centrarchidae with scarlet-lipped ear flaps is sheathed in seedy speckles of colors that range from Caramel orange to Lemon Drop yellow, Red Hots red to Starburst blue-raspberry blue and Lifesavers lime green. The \u201cofficial\u201d origin story is that the common name for this mid-sized fish (4\u201311\u2033 or 10\u201328 cm, tipping the scales at a maximum of 1.5 lbs or 680 g) derives from the oval contour of the body rather than the coloration pattern.<\/h4>\n

Maybe so, although to my eyes the pumpkinseed is classically fish-shaped and doesn\u2019t evoke memories of gutting and cleaning jack-o\u2019lanterns. Who can say why some folksy nicknames hook and reel us in, while in other cases we never quite take the bait?<\/h4>\n

Unlike their distant ray-finned cousins the trouts, salmons, and chars, all of whom insist on cool-to-chilly surroundings, pumpkinseeds like to live in balmier waters and, as such, are usually found close to the shore, in the shallows or in small sheltered pools. By the way, calm and clear are preferred over cloudy, thank you very much.<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Gazing at the smooth surface of a lake or the mesmerizing pulse of current in a tributary, it\u2019s natural to assume that the life aquatic delivers exactly what a pumpkinseed prefers\u2026 a tranquil, sequestered environment safe from the sturm und drang<\/em> of existence in the airy world up above.<\/h4>\n

Non. Nein. Nope.<\/h4>\n
\n

Here\u2019s the World War I Flying Ace (aka Lieutenant Pumpkinseed) hangin\u2019 in the water column, c<\/em>howing down on on mosquito larvae and minnow fry, or m<\/em>aybe some molluscs and crustaceans when he\u2019s in the mood for something crunchy.<\/em><\/h4>\n

Suddenly, he hears the muffled ping of raindrops colliding with the surface above!<\/em><\/h4>\n

Swiftly, he races to prepare for the forthcoming assault!<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

When precipitation pounds the pavement and heads for a stormwater drain, it will haul all manner of troubles, including chemicals, particulates, gravel, litter, and heat from the street.<\/em><\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/h4>\n

Good grief, by the time all that liquid spills out of the culvert into our intrepid aviator\u2019s home base it\u2019s a toxic brew indeed!<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

\"\"<\/h4>\n
\n

In the blink of an eye, the bucolic scene turns to chaos!\u00a0 <\/em><\/h4>\n

The situation heats up, literally, as the water temperature rises. <\/em>Dissolved oxygen levels drop, making it harder and harder to breathe\u2026 visibility decreases as soil and soot and sand and scum barrel in from above like a squadron of enemy biplanes\u2026<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

Dragged by the current, Lt. Pumpkinseed struggles to hold on in this dogfight. S<\/em>trafed from every angle by a barrage of trash, he dodges plastic shopping bags and water bottles, a shoe, a tire, cigarette butts, glass jars and aluminum soda cans, batteries (AAA to 12 volt), syringes and hypodermic needles, toasters\u2026 it\u2019s a real flotsam and jetsam grab bag!<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Then just as quickly, the crisis passes. <\/em>The waters calm, the sediments settle. <\/em><\/h4>\n

Time for our hero to pack up his kit, and head home from wherever he landed.<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Sorry to break it to you, Linus, but while sincerity might merit visits from a gift-laden gourd, it doesn\u2019t count for much when you\u2019re behind enemy lines, or in the maelstrom of a tempest.<\/h4>\n

No, life in a city\u2019s liquid realm requires physiological plasticity. Resilience. Grit, to use the currently popular parlance. When the going and the waters get rough, that\u2019s when the plucky pumpkinseed demonstrates a capacity for greatness that its humble nickname and stoic countenance do not portend.<\/h4>\n

Valor and a stiff upper lip are just as valuable as a lack of hypocrisy, at Halloween and the rest of the year, too. Because, sure, sometimes life hands you a chocolate bar, some cookies, or a package of gum\u2026 but sometimes you get a rock.<\/h4>\n

Have you ever listened to the mesmerizing serenade of field crickets (Gryllus<\/em> spp.) on a crisp autumn evening and wondered why they're doing that? I mean, the mercury's definitely headed south, the nights are going to become pretty chill, and those bugs'll be belly-up before too long. Yet they're standing on the stoop warbling impromptu a cappellas. What's up with that?<\/h4>\n

I'll give it to you straight:  crickets or Sinatra, it all comes down to Guys and Dolls<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

<\/h4>\n

First, there's An Affair to Remember<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

Ok, several affairs. What can I say? The Lady is a Tramp<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

A few weeks later the she cricket leaves her eggs to be fostered by soil or plant stems, then scurries away to die of exposure shortly thereafter. The guy(s) have long since split but suffer a similar fate.<\/h4>\n

The following spring their orphaned offspring hatch, molt, and become wingless nymphs \u2014  tiny versions of Mom and Pop(s). Summer is spent looking for rations and staying out of trouble, mostly. Then Autumn Leaves<\/em> mean it's time to go underground until things heat up again.<\/h4>\n

The Earth will make it's way half-way around the Sun and then the little ones will emerge again with a song in their hearts.<\/h4>\n

Well... not exactly.<\/h4>\n

Crickets don't really sing. The females are silent, and when males want to croon they don't clear their throats... they rub their wings together, kind of like snapping fingers. Very hip. So maybe it would be more accurate to say their wear their hearts on their sleeves. Except they don't have sleeves. Or arms. Or hearts.<\/h4>\n

Let's just say they do it their way.  I'm sure The Chairman would understand.<\/h4>\n

Speaking of Old Blue Eyes, Frank had plenty of hits and, early in his career, an impressive two-octave range. Male crickets aren't as vocally adept (because, as I just mentioned, they aren't using their voices) and their repertoire is limited to one Nice 'n' Easy<\/em> hit. Usually it's a single note, repeated as many times as necessary.  Crickets don't swing but they do have stamina, plus they mix up the tempo to suite the room (temperature).<\/h4>\n

And Jeepers Creepers<\/em>, there's something about a love song that sets the female heart a-flutter (even if she doesn't have an actual heart), especially In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

Makes no difference whether she's a Sophisticated Lady<\/em> or The Girl Next Door<\/em>. She'll leave home and go Wandering<\/em> in search of a song she just can't resist, and in no time at all she'll be Taking a Chance on Love<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

Apparently, a dreamy tune counts for a lot more than looks because a gal cricket will completely ignore the fact that her suitor's ears are on his front legs.  She's Funny That Way.<\/em><\/h4>\n

Come to think of it, Frankie's ears were rather conspicuous, too, but the bobbysoxers still swooned.<\/h4>\n
