With easy access from I-55, I-44 and I-64, Lafayette Park is located just south of downtown, west of Soulard, and north of Benton Park. Surrounded by the Lafayette Square neighborhood, it is a true pastoral refuge in the city. The main park address is 2023 Lafayette Avenue, St. Louis, MO; 63104. \"\"1) The <\/span>Park House <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/a>was built in 1867 for use as a police station. It now serves as a space for neighborhood meetings.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) This circular horse watering trough<\/a> was converted to a planter by the end of the 1800\u2019s.<\/p>\n

3) The Elizabeth Cook Pavilion<\/a><\/b><\/span> is the second one built on this site. The original rustic \u201csummer cottage\u201d had a thatched roof.<\/span><\/p>\n

4) Bronze casting from a life-sized statue of\u00a0George Washington<\/a><\/b><\/span> by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon was placed in the park in 1869.<\/span><\/p>\n

v1) Looking south toward Lafayette Avenue are fine examples of Victorian Second Empire townhouses.<\/span><\/p>\n

5) The\u00a01876 Music Pavilion<\/a><\/strong><\/span> was destroyed by the 1896 tornado. A second music stand, built on the surviving base, was demolished in 1951. Only the original base remains.<\/span><\/p>\n

6) Victorians could float around the Main Lake<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in swan boats. The swan house and fountain are reproductions of the Victorian originals.<\/span><\/p>\n

7) The Comfort Station or Boathouse, (now Kern Pavilion<\/strong><\/a><\/span>) was built in 1908.<\/span><\/p>\n

8) Naval Guns<\/a><\/b><\/span> from the British warship Actaeon, which sank in 1776, were placed in the park in 1897.<\/span><\/p>\n

9) The Thomas Hart Benton statue<\/b>,<\/a><\/span> sculpted by Harriet Hosmer and dedicated in 1868, was the first public monument in the State of Missouri.<\/span><\/p>\n

(10) <\/span>The Rock Garden<\/a><\/strong><\/span> grows amid mineral blossom (drusy quartz.) that once defined the edge of a lake featuring three fountains and a waterfall.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0v2) Looking west toward Missouri Avenue is a Presbyterian church (now condominiums) next door to an Italianate mansion. Further south, two Richardsonian Romanesque<\/a><\/strong><\/span> mansions flank Whittemore Place.<\/span><\/p>\n

11) This stone urn<\/a><\/b><\/span> was pictured in stereoscope views of Lafayette Park from the 1870\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

12) The ball field<\/strong><\/a><\/span> was a military parade ground in 1858. Colonel Thornton Grimsley<\/a>, a noted manufacturer and city alderman trained a volunteer militia there.<\/span><\/p>\n

v3) Looking North on Park Avenue: Fine examples of Victorian era mansions<\/strong><\/a><\/span> with mansard-style roofs.<\/span><\/p>\n

13) Iron fence built in 1869. Note areas of the original rip rap drains<\/a><\/strong><\/span> along the Missouri and Park Avenue fence lines.<\/span><\/p>\n

v4) Looking Northeast at Mississippi and Park Avenue is the commercial center of Lafayette Square.<\/span><\/p>\n

14) Stately iron and stone gates<\/b><\/a><\/span> erected in 1869. The fence and gates were designed by Francis Tunica.<\/span><\/p>\n

v5) Looking East to Mississippi Avenue: Second Empire townhouses<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, a flounder house at 1512 Mississippi Avenue, and Victorian houses with crested bays to the north.<\/span><\/p>\n

15) The playground features turtle and frog<\/strong><\/a><\/span> sculptures by longtime resident artist Bob Cassilly.<\/span><\/p>\n

16) The Rock Garden grotto was built in 1866. Only one iron bridge<\/a><\/strong><\/span> remains of two that replaced rustic bridges lost in the Cyclone of 1896.<\/span><\/p>\n
